The American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association's
Pipeline Scholars Program

The American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association (AREUEA) Pipeline Scholars initiative aims to expand the pipeline of researchers and practitioners in housing and real estate. As the leading association for academic research in real estate and urban economics, AREUEA has about 700 members who engage in cutting-edge research on housing and urban issues and can help introduce emerging professionals to the field.

Each year, we select 12-15 college students or recent graduates with an interest in pursuing graduate studies in real estate or urban economics. The selected pipeline scholars are invited to attend AREUEA’s National Meeting, held annually during the summer in Washington, DC.

The conference draws a wide array of real estate scholars and professionals, ranging from policymakers, government researchers, academic researchers, and practitioners. The conference is an ideal setting for emerging scholars and professionals to learn about careers in housing, real estate, and finance. We offer free registration and travel support to the selected participants. Specifically, we reimburse transportation expenses and offer lodging at or near the conference hotel.

The goal of the Pipeline Scholars program is to help students advance into a Ph.D. program in real estate or a related field. Students attend the regular conference events to see firsthand the frontiers of real estate research and networking opportunities. Additionally, the pipeline scholars attend a special event each year designed to advance their understanding of the field. Typically, it revolves around a panel discussion that will comprise speakers at different stages of their careers. Pipeline scholars also get an opportunity to connect to AREUEA members who can continue to provide guidance on careers and graduate school options after the conference.

The application for this program typically is available in February of each year. During the application process, an applicant will be asked to provide a resume and a brief cover letter (i.e., no more than 500 words) discussing why they are interested in learning more about real estate and urban economics and participating in the AREUEA Pipeline Scholars program. Additional details on the application and specific program will be provided as the conference date approaches.
