INTRODUCTION

The School of Business at the University of Connecticut invites applications for Director of the Center for Real Estate and Urban Economic Studies, a nationally and internationally recognized academic center of excellence in real estate education and research. The Director will hold a non-tenure-track teaching appointment at the rank of Extension Instructor or Assistant Extension Professor within the Finance Department and will begin in Fall 2022.

The School is looking for candidates who have a solid understanding of real estate as an asset class, strong leadership experience, and a desire to engage with the professional real estate community. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the Center’s outreach mission targeted at the real estate professional community, as well as be committed to effective undergraduate and graduate instruction, the development of innovative courses, and the mentoring of students in their professional development.

This position will also be expected to assist the University in its efforts to broaden participation among members of underrepresented groups; demonstrate through their public engagement and teaching the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into relevant course content; and contribute to the development of pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities of the Director include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading the Center’s outreach efforts including engaging and managing relationships with real estate industry professionals and professional organizations, such as the SIOR, CAR, and the GHAR state associations, Center alumni and friends, and the Connecticut Real Estate Commission.
  • Working with the School of Business Development team to raise funds for scholarships, research endowments, and other activities.
  • Overseeing the support and provision of real estate educational material and services to the Connecticut Real Estate Commission, as outlined in the Center enabling legislation.
  • Supporting student activities ranging from oversight of the Real Estate Society to recruitment and engagement with potential employers of real estate majors and minors. The Director will also work closely with faculty to facilitate and encourage their involvement in student activities.
  • Organizing and supporting student trips to Hartford, Boston, New York City, and Washington DC, among other locations, as well as student participation in case competitions.
  • Providing administrative support to the research function of the Center and supporting the Center’s engagement and partnership with specialized conferences that take place in-state, out-of-state, and internationally.
  • Coordinating and supporting state-wide annual economic real estate updates with local professional firms and associations.
  • Organizing and coordinating semi-annual meetings of the Center’s Advisory Committee.
  • Supervising professional staff who provide administrative and program support for the Center.
  • Preparing the Center’s annual report, which is submitted to the School of Business, the University, and the State of Connecticut.
  • Working closely with other UConn departments and research groups who are engaged in real estate-related teaching and research activities.
  • As an extension faculty member, teaching two three-credit courses per academic year.
  • Providing additional academic-related service activities within the Finance Department, the School of Business, and the University.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s or another graduate degree. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.
  • Five years of related real estate experience. One year overseeing large projects OR in a supervisory capacity over a smaller unit.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated collegiality.
  • Demonstrated experience managing relationships with stakeholders in the real estate and/or business community.
  • Demonstrated excellent administrative, organizational, and supervisory skills, including experience identifying and resolving administrative and day-to-day problems, prioritizing, multitasking, and time management.
  • Experience in undergraduate and/or graduate teaching.
  • Interest in participating in fundraising efforts.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. or another terminal degree in real estate or related field (completed or expected by August 22, 2022). Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable. • Demonstrated teaching excellence in higher education.
  • Ability to contribute through teaching, research, and/or service and community engagement to the diversity and excellence of the Center’s and Department’s missions.
  • Interest in and ability to teach a real estate technology course is desirable.
  • Proven track record leading successful fundraising efforts.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 11-month end-date non-tenure track position with the possibility of annual reappointment, contingent upon positive annual reviews and program funding, and may lead to a multi-year appointment. The successful candidate will be assigned a primary academic appointment at the Storrs campus, with the possibility of course assignment outside of the base campus or online. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
